Downeast Maine Residence

The objective of this project was to design and construct an artist residence and studio that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings while achieving exceptional energy efficiency. The structure features passive solar design and a vertical closed-loop geothermal heating system, all within a super-insulated building envelope. A grid-tied photovoltaic array powers the residence, ensuring annual "net-zero" energy consumption. Adding a unique touch, the roof is cultivated with blueberries during the summer months, further blending the building with its environment. This highly collaborative effort received notable recognition, including a 2013 Merit Award from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects and a 2014 Citation from the Maine Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
